I am quite well known in the Maltese Mac community, having sold Macs for 12 years. In these 12 years I gained considerable experience on Macs, in particular on the software trouble-shooting side of things.

Did you try to "Rebuild" your mailbox? Select your mailbox in the panel to the left, then go to the "Mailbox" menu and choose "Rebuild". Deleting plists can cause data lost - only do this if you are sure what you are doing.

Re: iPhone in Malta

What you say makes sense. Have you tried listing your points above on Apple's feedback site: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

If enough of you did this they might take notice. But just one or two would not make a difference.

Re: iTunes Library Management

Hi! Copy your iTunes folder across to your Time Capsule. Then start up iTunes holding down the "Option" key. iTunes will ask you to select an iTunes Library - simply guide it to the one on your TC.

Community Announcement from mariusmalta

October 20, 2008 by mariusmalta

Hi All, The Malta Mac Forum was designed to interface Maltese Mac Users with one-another with a view to share information, help each-other and possibly as a place where your could sell/buy second hand equipment. There is no financial motivation for creating this forum - these were the objectives of the forum: The object of this forum is to bring people together and to serve the Maltese Mac community. We're all here to share ideas and to make each other's lives easier. Sadly, it has not taken off. In the 5 or so months the forum has a grand total of 38 members which is a disappointing performance to say the least. Have any of you told your friends about it? Do you use it? Is it worth keeping the forum alive? Lets have a little feedback please! Thanks and regards Marius

Re: PPC Linux

September 18, 2008 by mariusmalta

This makes interesting reading. The PPC machines were well ahead of their time and this just proves it to me! As per my email one of my friends is looking into this and I'll be in touch if he comes up with anything. This is very specialist stuff and this person is quite an expert in this field.

Cheers

I have no experience on this as I know of nobody who has tried it locally. I'll ask around.

Re: Newsgroups or Usenet and Binary Files

September 17, 2008 by mariusmalta

Hi I remember when usenet groups were available in Malta. Not too sure what the situation is locally but probably the best way to start on this is to ask your ISP in case they are blocking any ports.

Re: Wireless

If your premises is large the extreme has slightly wider coverage. Having said that if the router is centrally located you should be ok with either. If you draw a rough scale plan of the property and speak to the agents' technician they should be able to confirm coverage.

The following articles may help you also:

Good luck!

Re: macbook battery

August 31, 2008 by mariusmalta

Hi - the battery will show signs that it is coming to the end of its lifespan. For example, whereas a full charge lasted you up to 4 hours in the past it only lasts 30 minutes etc. There is a page on Apple's site dedicated to looking after notebook batteries:

http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

Re the mouse, it is likely that some grime or fluff is trapped inside the scrollball housing. I would suggest that you give it another, more thorough clean and if it plays up again consider changing it.

Hope it works out!

Re: Airport Express

August 4, 2008 by mariusmalta

I mean one on the MSI and another on the Airport Express ;)

Re: Airport Express

August 1, 2008 by mariusmalta

I think it would be wiser to run two separate networks in this case.

Re: Airport Express

July 29, 2008 by mariusmalta

Normally yes (but use different wireless channels to avoid interference). However I'm not familiar with your setup so I can't confirm for sure.

Re: Airport Express

July 29, 2008 by mariusmalta

Hi Michelle,

The AirPort Express uses WDS (wireless distribution standard) when extending the range of a wireless network. Not all wireless routers use the WDS protocol and some only work with their own branded equipment.

Also check out the Tech Specs on the Apple AirPort Express page which states that the AirPort Express only supports "WPA-Personal" when joining an existing network.

For the record there are known issues with WDS between routers from different manufacturers. This is not to say that it can't be done, just that even if it can be done you may run into major difficulties.

In my opinion probably the easiest solution would be to replace the MSI with the AirPort Express and just use that as your main router.

I have heard that Vodafone expect it this year - you can call them to confirm.

Re: UPS

June 26, 2008 by mariusmalta

Hi,

Most UPS Systems work fine with the Mac - as long as you don't require stuff like software shutdown etc.

Surge protection comes with some of these and you can also find good quality trailing sockets with inbuilt surge protection.

Thanks

Marius

All's well that ends well - glad it all worked out!

Re: macbook displays block sign instead of apple and fails to boot.

May 19, 2008 by mariusmalta

Hi this could be a software issue according to this document:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805

It could be a sign that certain folders or files have been moved.

Personally I very much doubt it is a hardware problem but would need to examine the computer in order to confirm.

Hi Pauline,

Thanks for your feedback.

You may want to ask your system administrator if this process can be automated - some mail servers can be configured to automatically CC or BCC all mail you send.

Tell your friends

May 9, 2008 by mariusmalta

Hi all,

In order for this forum to work out, remember to tell your friends about it. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain and it is about time that the Mac community in Malta had this facility.

This forum has YOU in mind. It will be a place where you can hook up with other Mac users in Malta and abroad and share ideas and support one another, buy and sell used Macs and have a soapbox to stand up on and have your say!

So what are you waiting for? Join up, tell your friends to join and lets get this thing up and running.
