Solely maltese users?, by pauline

Hi Marius

I am having an increasingly widening circle of Mac users in another online forum who would love to get the info you kindly send on a weekly basis.

Only thing is they are British. So can they be part of this forum? What do you think?

Re: iPhone in Malta, by reubenz

As you say having an iPhone without an iTunes account does not make sense. I have an iPhone 3G and also a UK iTunes account so I can install and download apps. But if I didn't have the account I would think twice before getting the iPhone.

Re: iPhone in Malta, by mariusmalta

What you say makes sense. Have you tried listing your points above on Apple's feedback site: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

If enough of you did this they might take notice. But just one or two would not make a difference.

Re: iTunes Library Management, by mariusmalta

Hi! Copy your iTunes folder across to your Time Capsule. Then start up iTunes holding down the "Option" key. iTunes will ask you to select an iTunes Library - simply guide it to the one on your TC.

Re: iTunes Library Management, by spoon

Well, I think I've found the solution.

It seems that if you press the option key while starting iTunes you can select the library which you want iTunes to use. You can also create a new library. I created a brand new library and iTunes started up as if it were new. I added all the music on the mobile Lacie, imported the playlists from the previous library (by clicking File-Library-Import/Export Playlist) and I have libraries on the same HD. Now all I have to do when booting iTunes is choose which iTunes Library I want to use, whether it's the one with the music added from the Time Capsule or the one with the music added from the Lacie. It is possible to run more than one library on iTunes.

Long live Apple! :)

iTunes Library Management, by spoon

Which is the best way to organize my iTunes Music Library?

Here is the scenario:
MacBook Pro HD of 120GB
Time Capsule 500GB
Mobile Lacie 250GB

Folder containing audio files: 136GB

My music folder is obviously too large for it to be kept on the HD. So I leave it on the Time Capsule and import the audio files into iTunes from there. This means that if the Time Capsule is off or I am away from home the audio files in iTunes would be dead since I don't copy them into the iTunes Music Folder. I usually play music when I am at home and my MacBook Pro is stuck the desk. I have also backed up my music folder on a 250GB Lacie Mobile HD which is very small and portable.

I need to devise a way of being able to play my music both from the Time Capsule (when I am at home) and from my portable Lacie (when I am on the go) from the same iTunes Library. As things are now, for me to be able to play the music from my portable Lacie, I would have to add the 136GB of music into the iTunes Library. This would mean that I would end up with doubles since the Library would have audio files imported from the Time Capsule and from the Lacie.

I'm wondering whether moving my iTunes folder in the Home Folder to both the Time Capsule and the Lacie, and consolidating the library would solve the problem. All I would have to do is change the iTunes folder from the iTunes preferences depending whether I want to play music from the Time Capsule or from the Lacie.

Any ideas?

iPhone in Malta, by spoon

Like most Mac addicts and lovers I have been waiting for the iPhone to hit the Maltese shores. Well, it has finally happened... however, with one major flaw. We still have no iTunes Account. Frankly, I think that without an iTunes store account we cannot use half of the iPhone's potential since we cannot buy apps from the App Store. I have used a first generation iPhone in the past, and I decided to get rid of it because unlocking, jailbreaking and downloading fixes was too much of a hassle, the visual voicemail was not active, and I was not happy with the lack of some of the most basic phone features such as SMS message forwarding. So I figured I'd wait until it is officially available in Malta to be able to fully benefit from the features. Apart from the fact that version 2.0 did not introduce the SMS message forwarding, the iPhone still lacks some basic features which are standard in the most ordinary of mobile phones. I cannot understand why Apple is not seeing this. Another major flaw in my opinion is that the Notes on the iPhone do not sync with the Notes on your Apple Mail and iCal. This had caused me a great deal of confusion when I was using the iPhone since I would have loads of Notes which I inserted on the iPhone while I was on the go, and then they do not sync to Apple Mail or iCal.

The lack of an iTunes store account in Malta has convinced me that it is still not the right time to buy the iPhone. With all the money you pay to purchase the iPhone, it is still too expensive when you consider the number of limitations it has. For the same price I'd get a top notch Nokia which can sync beautifully with the Mac.

What do you people think?

Community Announcement from mariusmalta, by mariusmalta

Hi All, The Malta Mac Forum was designed to interface Maltese Mac Users with one-another with a view to share information, help each-other and possibly as a place where your could sell/buy second hand equipment. There is no financial motivation for creating this forum - these were the objectives of the forum: The object of this forum is to bring people together and to serve the Maltese Mac community. We're all here to share ideas and to make each other's lives easier. Sadly, it has not taken off. In the 5 or so months the forum has a grand total of 38 members which is a disappointing performance to say the least. Have any of you told your friends about it? Do you use it? Is it worth keeping the forum alive? Lets have a little feedback please! Thanks and regards Marius

Re: PPC Linux, by mariusmalta

This makes interesting reading. The PPC machines were well ahead of their time and this just proves it to me! As per my email one of my friends is looking into this and I'll be in touch if he comes up with anything. This is very specialist stuff and this person is quite an expert in this field.

Cheers

Re: PPC Linux, by amethystine

Cool...Complete novice Michelle explodes old iMac!!

Seriously though, it was this statement from <http://penguinppc.org/about/intro.php#what> that go me intriged

"Why use it?
PowerPC is a well-established architecture that's been used in high-end and embedded production systems since 1994. Linux is the fastest-growing operating system and supports a wide range of hardware, large and small. In fact one of the advantages of PPC Linux is its binary compatibility: a program built for a high-end server will work equally well on your desktop.

Because Power Macintosh contain PowerPC chips, many PPC Linux users were originally Mac users. One of Linux's advantages is that it supports old and slow machines quite well, meaning a Mac that is unable to run Mac OS X can still be useful as a server or even a workstation. Along similar lines, some companies have found they can convert old RS/6000 and pSeries to run Linux and much more current Linux software, such as virus- and spam-filters."

I also found out that preG3 is called Old World and G3 G4 and G5 are New World, and you can find old world linux software for your ppc8600 quite easily - choosing which one is the hardest....

I did prevously check out UBUNTU (XUBUNTU for older systems), and i was very impressed, but they are currently only offering support for Linux on Intel Mac's but not on PPC - which i thought defected the object!

I have no experience on this as I know of nobody who has tried it locally. I'll ask around.

Re: Newsgroups or Usenet and Binary Files, by mariusmalta

Hi I remember when usenet groups were available in Malta. Not too sure what the situation is locally but probably the best way to start on this is to ask your ISP in case they are blocking any ports.

PPC Linux, by amethystine

I have been thinking about running a PowerPC linux operating system on my old imac (G3) as it won't support Mac OS X - has anyone ever done this? And any suggestions on the best system to go for? As once you start checking it out, there seems to be a great choice available. I have been looking at Gentoo and Yellow Dog Linux. I have no particular reason for wanting to do this - except the challenge!

Newsgroups or Usenet and Binary Files, by amethystine

Does anyone remember when a long time ago we used to use outlook express on our Macs we used to be able to use the msn newsgroups??? Well that is my only experience with newsgroups. now i just love downloading stuff. I'm a big Science fiction fan, of which there is nothing available on Malta TV of no matter which service you use. So i download it instead! Anyhow i was surfing the web - checking out info on "torrents" - and someone commented that downloading torrents was way to slow and that using newsgroups was faster - i became intrigued and found out that you counld download binary files from newsgroups via usenet - BUT how on earth do you become a member of a newsgroup???? how do you find them? I downloaded "thoth" and "unison" but i am at a loss as to how to use them...... Any info Anybody???

Re: Wireless, by amethystine

Hi Knopfler,

Can't give you any technical advise, but wireless is great, me and my son use our iMac and MacBook all over our flat. So where ever the mood takes you the computer goes...

Good Luck
