I have been thinking about running a PowerPC linux operating system on my old imac (G3) as it won't support Mac OS X - has anyone ever done this? And any suggestions on the best system to go for? As once you start checking it out, there seems to be a great choice available. I have been looking at Gentoo and Yellow Dog Linux. I have no particular reason for wanting to do this - except the challenge!

I have no experience on this as I know of nobody who has tried it locally. I'll ask around.

Cool...Complete novice Michelle explodes old iMac!!

Seriously though, it was this statement from <http://penguinppc.org/about/intro.php#what> that go me intriged

"Why use it?
PowerPC is a well-established architecture that's been used in high-end and embedded production systems since 1994. Linux is the fastest-growing operating system and supports a wide range of hardware, large and small. In fact one of the advantages of PPC Linux is its binary compatibility: a program built for a high-end server will work equally well on your desktop.

Because Power Macintosh contain PowerPC chips, many PPC Linux users were originally Mac users. One of Linux's advantages is that it supports old and slow machines quite well, meaning a Mac that is unable to run Mac OS X can still be useful as a server or even a workstation. Along similar lines, some companies have found they can convert old RS/6000 and pSeries to run Linux and much more current Linux software, such as virus- and spam-filters."

I also found out that preG3 is called Old World and G3 G4 and G5 are New World, and you can find old world linux software for your ppc8600 quite easily - choosing which one is the hardest....

I did prevously check out UBUNTU (XUBUNTU for older systems), and i was very impressed, but they are currently only offering support for Linux on Intel Mac's but not on PPC - which i thought defected the object!

This makes interesting reading. The PPC machines were well ahead of their time and this just proves it to me! As per my email one of my friends is looking into this and I'll be in touch if he comes up with anything. This is very specialist stuff and this person is quite an expert in this field.

Cheers

Marius
